Lithuanian Dainius Kairelis and Italian Daniela Passalacqua grabbed the victory at the 7th Marcialonga Cycling Craft road race in Trentino region, on Sunday. Kairelis and Passalaqua kept everybody back on the 116k-long course, while Francesco Avanzo and Manuela Sonzogni eventually jumped on the first step of the 68k podium.

From the very first moment, the 2013 Marcialonga Cycling Craft was intense and enjoyable. Over 2200 cyclists gathered in Predazzo city centre, in the heart of Val di Fiemme, and after a few kilometres,Italy’s Roberto Mich and Carlo Muraro broke. On the first uphill, however, through the picturesque villages of Capriana and Anterivo, the pack closed the gap on the first group, and Kairelis put himself at the head, closely followed by Zen, Cunico, Bertuola, Varesco and Schweiggl. The Lithuanian sportsman kept the lead and at the beginning of the climb toPampeagoPass he clocked 1’15” advantage on Muraro. Bertuola and Zen never backed down and overtook Muraro on the uphill, while Varesco and Schweiggl reached the latter.

After the pass, a 12k-long steep downhill welcomed all riders who entered the South-Tyrol area heading towardsCostalungaPass.Mathias Schweiggl made a fantastic move here and crossed the pass in first position, even if Kairelis, Bertuola and Zen never lost his sight. The foursome headed down to Val di Fassa at full speed, nobody seemed to give in and the sprint was in the air. Kairelis made the perfect move and managed to cross the finish line first, followed by Zen, Bertuola and Schweiggl.

On women’s side, reigning UWCT champion Daniela Passalacqua always kept the leadership, followed by countrywomen Claudia Gentili and Astrid Schartmüller, who closed the race in this order.

The so-called medium route (68k and750 meterselevation gain) turned back to Predazzo right before thePampeagoPassclimb and Francesco Avanzo out-sprinted all his rivals. Adriano Lorenzi and Davide Spiazzi came in second and third respectively. Manuela Sonzogni won the female medium race.

The 7th Marcialonga Cycling Craft road race was the penultimate event of the National Challenge Giordana series and forms the Combined Event ‘Punto3 Craft’ along with last January’s Marcialonga XC ski-marathon and the Marcialonga Running event scheduled on September 1st.
